How to Wash a Real Human Hair Wig - Step by Step

Washing a real human hair wig properly helps maintain its look, longevity, and softness. Here's a step-by-step guide to doing it the right way:

🧴 What You’ll Need:

  • Wide-tooth comb or wig brush

  • Sink or basin

  • Sulfate-free shampoo (preferably for color-treated or human hair wigs)

  • Conditioner (also sulfate-free)

  • Towel

  • Wig stand or mannequin head

  • Optional: Leave-in conditioner or heat protectant spray

💦 Step-by-Step Guide

1. Detangle First

  • Gently comb the wig starting from the ends, working your way up to the roots.

  • Use a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush designed for human hair wigs to avoid breakage.

2. Rinse with Lukewarm Water

  • Place the wig under lukewarm (not hot!) running water.

  • Always let the water flow in the direction of the hair (from root to ends) to prevent tangling.

3. Apply Shampoo

  • Pour a small amount of shampoo into your hands and gently distribute it through the hair.

  • Do not rub or twist the hair. Just lightly stroke it through.

  • Focus on the strands—not the cap, unless the cap is particularly dirty.

4. Rinse Again

  • Thoroughly rinse out the shampoo under lukewarm water, again following the direction of the hair.

5. Condition

  • Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends.

  • Leave it in for about 5–10 minutes. For extra softness, use a deep conditioner.

  • Avoid applying conditioner directly to the cap if the wig is hand-tied, as it can loosen the knots.

6. Final Rinse

  • Rinse out the conditioner completely with cool to lukewarm water.

  • This helps seal the cuticle and add shine.

7. Gently Blot Dry

  • Pat the wig gently with a towel to remove excess water.

  • Do not wring or rub the wig.

8. Air Dry on a Stand

  • Place the wig on a wig stand or mannequin head.

  • Allow it to air dry completely. This preserves its style and prevents damage from heat.

✨ Optional Aftercare

  • Apply a light leave-in conditioner or serum if desired.

  • If you plan to use heat tools, always apply a heat protectant spray.

How Often to Wash:

  • Every 6–8 wears, or when there’s a product buildup, smell, or it feels dry.
