Your wig will typically appear to be flawlessly colored when you dip it into a tub of hot water that has been mixed with dye. However, as the hair dries, you may see lighter spots or inconsistent tones, particularly at the roots or in thicker parts.

This typically occurs because the pigment doesn't adhere to the strands as firmly as it should because the water dilutes the color. If you want a richer color, such as deep red, copper, jet black, or chocolate brown, water dyeing may not provide the full, saturated payoff you're looking for. However, it can be excellent for soft, pastel effects.

Many individuals believe that adding more dye will solve the issue, however this isn't always the case. It truly depends on how long the hair is submerged in the mixture and whether the color can penetrate all of the strands.

My Go-To Fix: The No-Water Rinse

If water dyeing is your go-to method, I highly recommend following up with what I call a no-water rinse.

Using a tint brush or your gloved hands, apply the remaining dye liquid straight to the hair after the initial dip. Any uneven areas that didn't completely absorb the color the first time are filled in by this.

If at all possible, let your wig air dry once everything has been cleaned and conditioned. Air drying avoids needless heat damage and maintains the texture's softness.
